Water Conservation: Guide for Selecting Agricultural Irrigation Valves

Agricultural irrigation valves, as essential control devices installed in irrigation systems, play a crucial role in controlling and ensuring the normal operation of the irrigation system. There are many types of irrigation valves that can regulate the direction of water flow and control switches, enhancing the functionality of pipelines and ensuring the safe and stable operation of the entire farmland irrigation system. Depending on their characteristics, they are suitable for different occasions.

Electric Butterfly Valve

Electric butterfly valves are used for switch control of low-pressure pipeline media and to control the flow of water in the pipeline.

Features: Easy and quick opening and closing, labor-saving, low fluid resistance, frequent operation possible; simple structure, small size, lightweight, and good regulating performance.

Pilot-operated Pressure Reducing Valve

The pilot-operated pressure reducing valve reduces the pressure at the inlet to the required outlet pressure by regulating it and relies on the energy of the irrigation water itself to automatically maintain stable outlet pressure. From a fluid mechanics perspective, a pressure reducing valve is a throttling element with variable local resistance. The pilot-operated pressure reducing valve changes the throttle area to alter the flow speed and kinetic energy of the fluid, causing different pressure losses to achieve pressure reduction. It then relies on the regulation of the control and adjustment system to balance the fluctuation of pressure after the valve with the spring force, keeping the post-valve pressure constant within a certain error range.

Air Valve

The air valve, also known as an intake or exhaust valve, is mainly used to regulate the amount of air in the pipeline. Air inevitably enters the pipelines of agricultural irrigation systems. Appropriate air is beneficial for the operation of the agricultural irrigation system, but too much or too little can lead to pipeline system rupture. Therefore, irrigation networks generally install air valves among the irrigation valves.

Safety Valve

The safety valve, as an irrigation valve, practically serves a similar function to the pressure reducing valve. It primarily protects against water hammer phenomena in the pipeline. It is generally installed at the starting section of the pipeline to control pipeline water pressure and prevent water hammer issues.

Ball Valve

The ball valve is a type of valve purely used for opening and closing the pipeline in the irrigation system. The ball valve is characterized by a simple and reliable structure, small size, light weight, and low cost.

Gate Valve

The gate valve is also a common opening and closing valve in agricultural irrigation valves. However, the gate valve has the feature of bidirectional opening and closing control, small water resistance, small switching force, and smoother operation.
